Project Duration
Jan 2018 - Dec 2019
Project Description
Through the support of this TD project, an interactive AR mobile app will be developed first for LIFS3330, and later for other LIFS courses.
An interactive AR enabled mobile app will be developed with the following features to support the laboratory classes and field trips to intertidal mudflats and rocky shores in HK:
Field guide of the intertidal mudflats and rocky shores in HK
A database of species and marine organisms at different marine environments
Concept checking questions and case-study questions for field trips and laboratory sessions
Videos and other materials of the preserved marine species specimens in the lab to show the morphology, diversity, relationships to other groups of organisms, and ecology or the specimens
English learning resources to support lab report writing skills in marine biology.

Adaptive Learning in Stochastic Modeling (MATH3425)
Project Leader
Prof Kani Chen
School / Dept
SSCI / MATH
Project Duration
Sep 2016 - Jun 2018
Project Description
The project aims to implement an adaptive learning algorithm in the course “stochastic modeling” (MATH3425), which I have been teaching in the past ten years. MATH3425 has been a very popular undergraduate course. It is also a required course for statistics major in the Department of Mathematics. Based on my teaching experience, I propose to establish an adaptive learning system that aims to increase the students’ learning efficiency. Such a system can be expanded to other courses.

Development of an experiential course "Using movie to teach science"
Project Leader
Prof Che Ting CHAN
School / Dept
SSCI / PHYS
Project Duration
Jan 2016 - Dec 2017
Project Description
The project aims at improving students' potentials of being a successful educator on the one hand; on the other hand, strengthening their concepts in science. By participating in organising a science summer camp to secondary school students, our undergraduates will learn:
To clarify and consolidate the concepts of the subject materials
To create and develop teaching tools that can be used to teach Science in an interesting manner
To organise teaching and learning activities
To present and communicate with a broad audience; and
To communicate with secondary school students

Engaging undergraduate students in a high-school outreach initiative in life science
Project Leader
Prof Ho Yi Mak
School / Dept
SSCI / LIFS
Project Duration
May 2016 - Aug 2017
Project Description
The project aims to motivate the undergraduate LIFS students to relate what they have learnt about human genetics to current issues; and then to transfer their knowledge to high school students. The project proposed a new course that engages students in scientific literature review and laboratory-based problems. At the end of the course, students will lead the laboratory exercises that they have optimized to high school students.

Bringing Chemistry to Life in Common Core Chemistry Course
Project Leader
Dr Jason Chan
School / Dept
SSCI / CHEM
Project Duration
Mar 2015 - Feb 2018
Project Description
This project aims to enable students to develop a strong connection between theories and real-lifephenomena, and learn to perceive the processes and materials of this world with the chemical understanding they have learnt by re-developing the textbook-driven course, CHEM1004, preparing a course website as well as introducing demonstration materials into lecture courses.

Enhancing students' self-efficacy through inquiry-based assessment techniques
Project Leader
Prof Karen Chan
School / Dept
SSCI / LIFS
Project Duration
Jun 2015 - May 2017
Project Description
The goal of this project is to research if shifting the emphasis of assessment to mastery of skills concerning scientific inquiry would help increasing students’ internal motivation to learning, and ultimately improve learning outcome. The goal will be achieved by:
Modifying and further developing a set of problem sets that are data-driven and inquired-based on core concepts of ocean sciences
Engaging students in an online virtual lab as a final project
Adopting a scientific approach and quantify the effectiveness of these intervention through the use of concept inventories, attitude surveys and focus groups.
Project Outcome
The project is still ongoing. Project outcomes will be updated upon project completion.

Science Education with Case Method - a pilot project to develop cases in life sciences
Project Leader
Prof King L CHOW
School / Dept
SSCI / LIFS
Project Duration
Jan 2015 - Jun 2017
Project Description
The objective of this project is pilot-building a number of science cases that center on issues that demand sufficient understanding of the scientific knowledge, but at the same time require thorough consideration from social, economic and political viewpoints. With the cases, students are expected to acquire the ability to critically evaluate any scientific issues with a comprehensive consideration of all related information and different perspective, but not solely based on hard facts.

Teaching Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving Skills for Calculus
Project Leader
Prof Jishan Hu
School / Dept
SSCI / MATH
Project Duration
Sep 2014 - May 2017
Project Description
The project aims to foster students' mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills with an online self-tutoring sytem that consists of 3 key components:
Show students how to break a difficult mathematical problem into a set of easier manageable sub-problems;
Make mathematical reasoning step-by-step and transparent; and
Provide the reference of key concepts through html links.

The objective of this project is to develop a collection of paper-based or pdf formatted problem solutions and notes in such a way that students is likely to learn critical thinking through a pictorial understanding of the problems and a good understanding of the logics of each step in the solutions. A pilot study will be run by focusing on the first 3 chapters of the course textbook for a Physics course, PHYS5250 “Quantum Mechanics I” . Students will take initiative to learn the logics and rationale behind the concepts and problems covered in the course with this new pedagogical approach.

Buildup of the Missing Link between Teaching and Learning in "General Chemistry – I"
Project Leader
Prof Xiao-Yuan Li
School / Dept
SSCI / CHEM
Project Duration
Jan 2014 - Jun 2015
Project Description
This project intends to build up the key missing link in the teaching and learning of the course "General Chemistry-I". Using LMES as the delivery planform to provide a carefully selected set of key problems/questions with a step-by-step solutions guided (with links) for topics covered in General Chemistry-I, therefore providing a quality-controlled and consistent self-tutoring tool for the training of concept-based reasoning and problem-solving skills in the study of "General Chemistry-I". The ultimate goal of this project is to convert the learning style (or habit) of students from mostly facts-memorization to mostly concept-based reasoning, analyzing and problem-solving in their study of "General Chemistry-I".
Project Outcome
The project outcomes are yet been updated.
