A selection of completed and ongoing teaching development projects is given below to provide a flavor of the varied range of projects that can be funded.

Innovation in Mathematics Support through a Blended-Learning Approach

Prof Allen Moy & Prof Jimmy Fung, MATH

The project was a scale-up of the pilot project carried out in 2011/12 when an online homework system, WeBWork, was introduced and a pilot Mathematics Support Center (MSC) was tested to provide drop-in mathematics learning supports to students from selected mathematics courses. This project aimed to extend the operation of the MSC to support a wider spectrum of students from all the basic UG mathematics courses covering 2500 – 3500 students, and to integrate the majority basic math courses, such as calculus and linear algebra, with the open source WeBWork.  With the success of this project and the valuable operational experience gained in running such center, a permanent location of the MSC was established.

Authentic Design Experiences in a Capstone Design Course for Engineering Identity Development

Prof Ben Chan, E2I

This project aimed to develop students’ engineering identity by providing authentic design experiences in the capstone design course CIVL4950. In the course, students became the members of fully simulated civil engineering consulting firms and worked on a real construction project as a team consisting of members from various civil engineering disciplines. With the unique learning experience, students transformed from engineering students to student engineers.

Enhancing the Teaching and Learning of Business Ethics by Building up an Online Collection of High Quality Student-generated Projects

Prof Mark Mihorean, MGMT

This project was initiated by the instructor of SBMT2010, a compulsory ethics course for all SBM students. One of the coursework was the Applied Ethics Service Project (AESP) which was a student-directed project that allows students to have full autonomy to decide the project topics and apply what they learnt in the project. Since there were numerous ethical topics that students can focus on, this project primarily aimed at creating an online collection of previous students’ AESP as a database for the students of subsequent cohorts to reference. At the same time, the online collection served as a teaching resource for the course instructor to highlight relevant real-life examples to reinforce particular themes in the course.

Learning Knowledge Application in the Real World: Coursework as a Platform for Students to Collaborate with Practitioners

Prof Kevin Kim-Pong Tam, SOSC

The project team employed an experiential learning approach in two psychology courses, SOSC2210 and SOSC3000D, to enable students to apply what they learnt to tackle real environmental issues designated by the instructors and frontline practitioners. While developing the intervention strategies, students actively interacted with the frontline practitioners, teaching team and their peers from various disciplines. Students were also given opportunities to implement their strategies in real situations. Findings were finally presented to the class as well as all the participated frontline practitioners who highly appreciated the collaboration.
