Student Engagement and Satisfaction Questionnaire (SESQ)

Background and Purposes

In late 2006, at the initiation of the Vice President Office for Academic Affairs, effort was made to develop a survey instrument, entitled "Student Engagement and Satisfaction Questionnaire" (SESQ) to collect systematic feedback from final year UG students about their education experience at HKUST. The purposes of the survey are:

  1. To find out the level of students' engagement in learning during the three years of their UG study;
  2. To collect students' views about the effectiveness of the UG programs in helping them to develop their general competencies;
  3. To solicit students' views regarding their overall evaluation of the UG programs.

Methodology

In developing the instrument, similar program evaluation instruments used in overseas higher education institutions, especially the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), were used as reference. SESQ was piloted twice, in Nov 2006 and Mar 2007 respectively. In 2008, based on the views of representatives from Schools and Supporting Units, a revised, shorter and more focused version of SESQ was prepared. This revised version which contains 25 questions became the stable core of SESQ. The establishment of the stable core for SESQ allows comparison across year. Each year, besides the core question set, SESQ will have a special focus. In 2011, the focus is on students' participation in out-of-class activities at HKUST.

The finalized questionnaire survey for 2011 consists of four parts:

  • Academic Experience at HKUST
  • Other Learning  Experiences at HKUST
  • Interaction with Teaching Staff and Peers
  • Learning outcomes
SESQ was first administered to final year UG students in April 2007. Since then, it has become an annual exercise that takes place during the period from March to June. The online survey period and the response rate of each year are listed below:
