The project further explored the use of the online materials developed in the preiovus projects by implmentating them in class together with the Personal Response System.
Project Outcome
The project put forth a model to enable collective teaching initiatives with the following outcomes:
One thirds of the students were positive about the usage of the PRS in their class;
Students generally found the learning resources more accessible and this contributes positively to their learning;
Participating faculties acknowledged the project in assisting them to implement their teaching initiatives.

Developing the School-based Student Self Accessing Practice Test Sites with New OBA elements (Renewal)
Project Leader
Prof Barry Sautman
School / Dept
SHSS / SOSC
Project Duration
Jun 2010 - Jan 2012
Project Description
The project expanded the website, which was developed in a previous project, Student Self Accessing Practice Test Sites, by adding new assessment and learning tasks, developing assessment rubrics and providing supplementary learning materials.
Project Outcome
33 courses with around 4000 students in the School of Humanities and Social Science between Spring 2009 to Fall 2011 benefited from the Student Self Accessing Practice Test Sites (SSAPTS). Students reckoned the learning tools offered by the SSAPTS project useful to them especially in terms of helping them to track their learning progress, understanding the subject matter as well as familiarizing with the exam format. Positive feedback was received from the instructors participating in the project as well. Furthermore, two school-based TA training workshops were organized in Spring and Summer 2011 with a purpose to improve the quality of student learning.

To facilitate student learning on a progressive basis, a self-accessing practice test site will be built to provide students with interactive study resources, including practice questions, sample essays, and discussion board.
To improve student ability to apply declarative knowledge. In other words, we will present students with an opportunity to function with the knowledge they have or which they acquire related to China and the world.
To help students learn how to successfully write high-quality essays through reading 'model' essays.
The test site will enable instructors to track down student learning behavior and effectiveness by referring to the data of user counts and exam grades. It also seeks to facilitate instructors to improve their assessment techniques and address common learning questions by responding to the ongoing feedback from the site users.
Project Outcome
A Student Self Accessing Practice Test Site (SSAPTS) was built in 15 courses (4 courses in Spring 2009, 3 courses in Summer 2009 and 8 courses in Fall 2009) through LMES. The test site provided students with interactive study resources, including case-analysis type multiple-choice practice questions, annotated sample essays, writing handbooks, workshop videos and discussion board.

A Learning-by-Example Learning Module for Programming Courses
Project Leader
Prof James Kwok
School / Dept
SBM / ISOM
Project Duration
Dec 2006 - May 2009
Project Description
The objectives of this project are: 1. To develop an online learning module of LMES for business school students to enable them to learn their first programming language in a more effective way by means of learning-by-example 2. To help students develop habits of peer-learning and self-directed learning 3. To enable and facilitate program sharing and peer-learning 4. To provide an online compiler (adopted from another CELT project) for students to evaluate their programs online.
Project Outcome
An online learning module (online forum with specified searching and polling function) incorporated with the ASP Editor were developed. A reference link gathering available online resources for learning programming language was also provided in the course websites.
Project was implemented in ISMT223 (Fall 07-08) and ISMT535 (Spring 07-08). Students were encouraged to share their example codes via discussion forum and practice using the ASP Editor to learn VBScript in class and after class. One assignment using example code was designed in ISMT223. Group discussion (within group members) and project discussion (for all students) via online forum were designed in one assignment to promote peer learning in ISMT353.
Students learnt how to learn programming languages through online tutorials and resources and how to document their sharable programs. They also learnt to understand the way of learning by examples through this module.

Design and Development of LMES-Based Course Web Sites for IT Courses
Project Leader
Prof James Kwok
School / Dept
SBM / ISMT
Project Duration
Oct 2005 - May 2008
Project Description
The project is closely related to Learning Management and Evaluation System (LMES). The major teaching and learning issues include understanding:
feasibility and applicability of LMES for IT-related courses, such as programming courses
experience of designing and developing IT-related course websites with LMES
users’ experience of using LMES
Project Outcome
The ASP Editor (add-on module in LMES) was developed and specially designed as a learning tool for IT-related courses.
Project was implemented in ISMT223 (Fall 06-07) and ISMT535 (Spring 06-07). The ASP Editor was used in class to demonstrate and compile VB programs. The results of the VB programs will be displayed immediately after the program execution. Students were encouraged to make use the tool to learn VB scripts in class and after class.

Development of Lecture-Demonstration Interactive Approach for Engineering Dynamics Teaching/Learning Using Wireless MEMS-based Motion Sensors
Project Leader
Prof Yi-Kuen Lee
School / Dept
SENG / MECH
Project Duration
Jul 2011 - Jan 2013
Project Description
This project developed both hand-on and virtual demonstration/experiment modules to supplement and assist classroom teaching using the advanced wireless MEMS-based motion sensors. The objectives were to stimulate students’ interest, promote interactive learning environment and effectively transfer knowledge through the combine lecture-demonstration teaching approach.
Project Outcome
The project developed a set of experiment kits to supplement and assist classroom teaching of the Engineering Dynamics courses (MECH103 / MECH2030)

Development of Lecture-Demonstration Interactive Approach for Solid Mechanics Teaching/Learning
Project Leader
Prof Wenjing Ye
School / Dept
SENG / MECH
Project Duration
Mar 2011 - Jun 2013
Project Description
This project developed hand-on and virtual demonstration/experiment modules to supplement teaching and learning activities of Solid Mechanics. Through these modules, it aimed to stimulate students' interest, promote interactive learning environment and effectively transfer knowledge. Specifically, demonstrating tools were developed to illustrate deformation of some basic structure elements, and commercial FEM softwares was employed to create virtual experiments for the demonstration of physical experiments in engineering mechanics computation and design.
Project Outcome
Developed a series of virtual demonstration modules to illustrate the relationship between the applied loading, deformation of the structure elements and the stress developed inside the structures. These modules include 3D illustrators, videos and virtual experiments produced using the commercial software ABAQUS.
In parallel with the development of virutal teaching modules, three sets of devices have been designed for experiments on axially loaded bar, torsional shaft and bending beam. Multiple units of each device have been manufactured, enabling in-class testing.

Project Leader
Prof David Rossiter
School / Dept
SENG / CSE
Project Duration
Feb 2007 - Dec 2007
Project Description
The project provided students (who often cannot attend lectures for legitimate reasons) access to the lecture material via a podcast.
Project Outcome
A new feature of the GONG system was developed and able to support import of any podcast and export any voice board in the system as a podcast. An add-on podcasting feature of GONG system was designed in Java environment which was applicable to all platforms. RSS subscription function was added. Any audio recordings can be simultaneously published as a podcast. Newly added or edited messages in the Gong voice board will automatically reflected in the Gong podcast by any podcast reading system.
The system was implemented in a course.
