Designing out Plagiarism
Plagiarism is defined as submitting someone else’s work which is not your own and originates from other sources as if it is your own, without appropriate attribution to the sources. Students often find the concept of plagiarism confusing. As teaching staff, it is necessary to explain to the students what is considered as plagiarism under the University regulations, and allow students to understand that work that originates from other sources may be used if it is properly acknowledged and referenced. The HKUST Library staff run workshops on this for students and are a great source of expertise for all.
When designing and evaluating assessment tasks, measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood that students can or would plagiarize and checking tools can be used to assess the originality of a piece of textual work. Academic integrity and honesty are core values of HKUST; you can click here for details of the University regulations.
