"Inspiring Students to Learn"
To be good teachers, we need to equip and inspire students to learn (and hopefully they learn on their own even after the course). Here are my thoughts on four teaching tips:
- Enthusiasm - If we are not excited about what we teach, students will never be inspired to learn from us.
- Organization and clarity - The lecture materials and presentation have to be clear and well organized. I always put all my notes on the web so that students can focus more on understanding my lectures rather than taking notes.
- Active learning - It is a challenge to make UST students speak up in class. Besides using newspaper articles, I assign group exercises to be done in class. This may be a business case problem or an extended problem from the lecture materials. This allows students to talk among themselves and helps encourage more class discussions.
- Caring for students - I always try to talk to my students to find out how I can help them.
