"Turning the classroom into an open, intellectual place to learn"
In providing general education in philosophy for undergraduate students, my objectives are 1) to broaden the students' horizons; 2) to develop their skills in thinking. In order to fulfill these objectives, I am always eager in my lectures to make the classroom an open, intellectual place to learn, such that the students can feel free and comfortable to raise questions as discussion is encouraged.
At the beginning of a lecture, I would go over the main points covered in the last lecture. At the end of each lecture, I will ask students to summarize the main points of the lecture, so that I can correct them if necessary.
Since teaching and learning are interactive processes, being sensitive to the needs of the students is an important element to improve the quality of teaching. So, I always seek the feedback of my students concerning progress of teaching, level of materials, etc. Their comments are discussed in the class. Some of the suggestions are adopted while some are not. I would always explain to them the reason, thus possible misunderstandings can be avoided.
