Reading Homework: Up to now, many students and instructors only use textbook and solve the accounting problems in the book - like solving mathematics. However, accounting should be a lot more than just solving problems. To show real life examples of accounting to students, I collected accounting related news from newspapers (such as Wall Street Journal) and business journals (such as Forbes, Asia Week). Students were asked to read them and answer to short questions. By this way, students could learn the importance and usefulness of accounting in real life setting.
Group Research Project: There were a total of three group research projects during the semester. For each project, I randomly assigned students to different groups composed of 5 to 7 students. Students were asked to solve accounting related cases which required a lot of independent research and critical thinking. Upon completion, students had to submit a final research report (100 points each) and present their conclusions (50 points each). To minimize free-rider problem and to be fair to hard-working students, raw scores were adjusted by the peer evaluation scores. Through GRP, students may learn independent research as well as cooperative ability. Although some of the students complained about the amount of works related to the group research project, I think most of them liked it.
Group Presentation: After GRP2 and 3, each group presented their conclusions for 10 minutes. The presentations were evaluated by myself (20 points), TA (20 points), and students (10 points) to minimize any prejudice. After the presentations, I gave a lot of written comments to each group to improve their presentation skills. Students also exchanged written comments. Through this, I think students learn valuable lessons. Later, I found out many students appreciated the comments.
Interactive Website: I found out that many students liked the interactive website (webct.ust.hk) I maintained for the class. Students posted questions or expressed their opinions in the web and I answered to them. By the end of semester, a total of 669 messages were posted on the web. These great numbers of messages may show the degree of interactions between I and them (and among themselves) during the class. Interaction is one of the most critical factors in the teaching, I believe.
