"The secret to great teaching"
The secret to great teaching is to build excitement and curiosity among students. That means helping them to see the wonder of everyday experience. If you stop to think about it, our collective knowledge of the world is truly amazing. I try to bring some of that amazement into the classroom every day. When you become an expert in a subject, you tend to see applications everywhere you look. I try to bring those observations into the classroom in order to add life to the textbook. My lectures are filled with references to things I have read in newspapers, magazines, journals and even novels! I talk about what I see or hear or even smell on my way to the classroom, and I ask students to tell me what they've observed as well. It's all part of the world we're teaching them about. When you're excited about your subject, it shows in your expressions, your movements, and your tone of voice. Some people say Asian students lack inherent curiosity but I disagree. If a professor shows his/her own excitement and curiosity about the world, the students will share it. Enthusiasm is infectious!
