Augment Your Teaching Reality

Date:
Friday, 29 April, 2016 - 12:30 to 14:00

Speakers:  David Watson, MSc. PGCTHE. BSc. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), CMALT
Educational Development Officer, Educational Development Centre, PolyU
Indie Chung, Educational Development Officer, Educational Development Centre, PolyU

Format:  Seminar

Seminar Overview:

Augmented Reality (AR) overlays the digital world over the physical world – thus ‘augmenting’ the real world experience. With AR, people can overlay digital content to objects, printed material or geographic locations, then use a smart device to scan for the digital content to appear. AR creates unique interactive experience for learners and can “bridge the learning gap between abstract descriptions and the real world phenomena,” (Luckin, Fraser: 2011) offering the potential to motivate both learners and teachers to re-think the way they engage in learning and teaching.

The 'Lean forward Experience,' where the participant is encouraged to actively engage with content can be simply created by using the camera on a smart device to retrieve AR content via images or by your location, inviting the viewer to interact, rather than be a passive onlooker. This BYOD workshop requires participants to bring your own mobile device (iOS or Android).

Seminar Objectives:

  • Understand the principles of Augmented Reality (AR) and hold a basic knowledge of the technology used to develop AR.
  • Explore how AR is being used in education (HE) under different disciplines.
  • Discuss with your peers areas where Augmented Reality can enhance your teaching practice and/or benefit practice & services.
  • Understand the parameters and consideration needed when applying AR to education.
  • Create an ‘Aura’ using the appropriate application by linking trigger images to instructional multi-media.
