From Blended Learning to MOOCs

In this seminar the presenter has shared with the participants the best practices of how to integrate MOOC-style videos to support a variety of active learning approaches to support on-campus students in engaging with the course more deeply. She also addressed the best practices of how to motivate students to complete their pre-class preparation and discussed new features of Coursera’s on-demand platform where participants can learn about lecture watching behaviors and formative (pre-lecture) quiz performance. Finally, the presenter also shared stories from two instructors at National Taiwan University and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne who have very positive feedback from students on MOOC-video use for on-campus experiences.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Beth Simon is the Principal Teaching and Learning Specialist on the Course Success team. Beth is also a professor of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego where she specialized in teaching large classes and improving learning with educational technology. She also worked with faculty adopting Peer Instruction in their courses as Director of UCSD’s Center for Teaching.
