Presenter: Prof Karl Smith

Format: Workshop

Formal teamwork is widely practiced in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) disciplines through projects, capstones, hand-on exercises, field experiences, and other contexts. Currently there is increased interest in fostering innovation and creativity.

This workshop provided a theoretical framework and practical foundation for cultivating innovation and creativity through high performance teamwork in STEM disciplines. The interactive workshop emphasized the faculty role in structuring high performance teamwork, especially building student's commitment to the project goals and creating a climate of accountability. Guidance was provided for faculty in developing student's creativity and teamwork skills -- communication, leadership, decision making, and conflict management -- as well as group processing and monitoring. The intended outcomes included expanded repertoire of strategies for designing and supporting high performance teamwork, and strategies for fostering creativity and innovation.
