New Faculty Orientation 2015
The New Faculty Orientation is a teaching and learning introductory program for all teaching staffs who are either newly on-board or are within one-year of service at HKUST. The program is specifically designed to take account of some key aspects of teaching and learning in the context of HKUST.
Participants will be able to gain knowledge of the strategic importance teaching and learning initiatives at HKUST; demographic and culture of the student body; undergraduate curriculum and the role and nature of academic advising; common core curriculum; postgraduate programs and strategy of supervising research students; and roles and responsibilities of teaching assistants. Distinguish teaching award winner and early career faculty will share their teaching practice and give advice on how to make learning happen. Staff will also find out from the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching, Information Technology and Services Center, and Library on resources that can support their teaching and research

Day 1 – UG’s Program at HKUST
Session 1: Knowing you, and knowing your students
This session intends to let us learn about you, such as your background and previous teaching experience, and let you to get to know about the UG students at HKUST. Some of the UG students’ characteristics including demographics, background and study habits will be introduced. Diversity of HKUST’s student body and teaching for diversity will also be touched upon.
Session 2: UG’s Program and Academic Advising
In this session, the Associate Provost of Teaching and Learning will present an overview of the HKUST’s UG curriculum and walk you through some of the strategic teaching and learning initiatives at UST. Since effective academic advising is essential for student success, the academic advising practice at UST and each School will also be presented.
Session 3: Making Common Core a Core Business for HKUST Students
The Common Core Program is an integral component of the undergraduate curriculum. It is a key part of the undergraduate educational experience, complementing studies in specialist disciplines and other learning opportunities. This session gives an overview of the common core curriculum, and also the development process of common core course.
Day 2 - Teaching at HKUST
Session 4: Getting Feedback on Your Teaching
Gathering feedback from students about your teaching can be useful in helping you to develop and refine your teaching. This session will provide a number of different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester.
Session 5: Sharing from HKUST Professor
In this session, faculty will share their experience of teaching at HKUST. You can learn from distinguish teaching award winner on good practice in teaching, as well as advice from new faculty on aspects that is helpful when you first start your academic careers.
Session 6: Library Support for Teaching and Research
Subject librarians will introduce new faculty to the Library's major resources and services that support their teaching and research, such as databases, e-journals, e-books, Interlibrary Loan, Course Reserve, Library Instruction Classes for course assignment/project, Research Consultation and Institutional Repository.
Day 3 - Support for Teaching at HKUST
Session 7: PG Students PhD Supervision, and Working with TAs
This session will describe the structure of PG programs at HKUST with special emphasis on the supervision of RPG students. The session also cover the postgraduate teaching assistants’ roles and responsibilities at HKUST, and advice will be given on how to work with them effectively to support your teaching.
Canvas is the learning management system adopted at UST. This session will guide you through the basic and key features with hands-on practice on how to create and manage the content of a course, grade students’ work, monitor learning progress, and communicate with students through Canvas.
Session 9: Academic Support and Services from ITSC
The Information Technology Service Center (ITSC) will introduce all major IT and AV facilities available in the teaching venues at UST. This session will also walk you through the set-up of Personal Response System (PRS) and how clickers can be used to facilitate your classroom teaching.
