What the sessions are about:

1. Knowing our Students

This session intends to let you know more about the UST students by introducing some of their characteristics including demographics, background and study habits to you. Various student support services will also be introduced.

2. Sharing from HKUST Professors

This session will be delivered by HKUST faculty who will share their experiences of teaching at HKUST with a short presentation followed by a question and answer session.

3. Working with Teaching Assistants

This session will be delivered by CELT staff and will cover teaching assistants' roles and responsibilities at HKUST. It will also provide advice on how to work with them to effectively support your teaching. The second part of the session will give you the opportunity to hear from experienced TA Coordinators on how to make this teaching relationship productive.

4. Getting Feedback on Your Teaching

This session will provide a number of different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester. This session will be delivered by CELT staff.

5. PG Programs and RPG Supervision

This session will be delivered by PGSO. It will describe the structure of PG programs at HKUST with special emphasis on the supervision (and funding) of RPG (MPhil/PhD) students.

6. Introduction to LMES

LMES is a comprehensive Learning Management System with functionalities similar to Moodle and Blackboard. It is based on the academic open-source system Sakai and specially customized for HKUST's own needs. It has been piloted since 2005, currently there are over 300 courses using LMES in an academic year. This session will introduce you to the basic functions and features of LMES.

7. Making the Common Core A Core Business for HKUST Students

The Common Core Program is an integral component of the undergraduate curriculum. It is a key part of the undergraduate educational experience, complementing studies in specialist disciplines and other learning opportunities. This introductory session will highlight how Common Core Program could help to trigger students to think about the purposes of university education and its value to them, how faculty could help to create a positive learning environment for students and to achieve the Common Core goals, and how common core instructors will be supported in this educational journey.

8. Academic Support and Services from ITSC

New faculty will be introduced to all the major IT and AV facilities available in the teaching venues. Some other important ITSC services to faculty may also be mentioned.

9. Library Support for Teaching and Research

Subject librarians will introduce new faculty to the Library's major resources and services that support their teaching and research, such as databases, e-journals, e-books, Interlibrary Loan, Course Reserve, Library Instruction Classes for course assignment/project, Research Consultation and Institutional Repository.
