New Faculty Orientation Spring 2014

The Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching has organized a Faculty Orientation program that covers various topics and teaching and learning support services at HKUST. All faculty members and teaching staff are welcome to join the sessions that are of interest.

Session 1:
Knowing our Students
This session intends to let you know more about the UST student population (both local and non-local) such as their family background, pre-university education and study habits based on data collected from students.

Session 2:
Designing your Course Based on OBE
This session will cover course design for outcomes-based education involving the alignment of outcomes, assessments and learning activities and hands-on practice with constructing a visual syllabus. Please bring along a current or previous syllabus for courses you will teach in the coming semester.

Session 3:
Sharing from HKUST Professors
This session will be delivered by HKUST faculty who will share their experiences of teaching at HKUST with a short presentation followed by a question and answer session.

Session 4:
Making the Common Core A Core Business for HKUST Students
The Common Core Program is an integral component of the undergraduate curriculum. It is a key part of the undergraduate educational experience, complementing studies in specialist disciplines and other learning opportunities. In this introductory session, Professor King Chow will share with participants the vision and goals of the Common Core and how he sees it could help to trigger students to think about the purposes of university education and its value to them. He deeply believes that faculty participation as educators is pivotal to create a positive learning environment for students and to achieve the Common Core goals. He will explain the common core course development process and share how common core instructors will be supported in this educational journey.

Session 5:
OBE: Learning Assessment
This session will introduce the alignment of learning assessments to learning outcomes and include hands-on practice with developing assessment rubrics. Please bring along a current or previous syllabus for courses you will teach in the coming semester.

Session 6:
Getting Feedback on your Teaching
This session will provide a number of different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester. This session will be delivered by CELT staff.

Session 7:
Introduction to LMES
LMES is a comprehensive Learning Management System with functionalities similar to Moodle and BlackBoard. It is an adaptation of the open-source LMS, Sakai, and is specially customized for HKUST’s own needs. It was introduced to the University since 2005. Currently there are over 1,500 courses using LMES in an academic year. This session will introduce you to the basic functions and features of LMES.
