New Faculty Orientation, Spring 2016

The New Faculty Orientation is a teaching and learning introductory program for all teaching staff who are either newly on-board or are within one-year of service at HKUST. The program is specifically designed to take account of some key aspects of teaching and learning in the context of HKUST.

Participants will be able to gain knowledge of the strategic teaching and learning initiatives at HKUST; the demographics and culture of the student body; and undergraduate curriculum. New staff can find out from the Center for Education Innovation the resources that can support their teaching at UST, as well as learn about designing courses based on outcome-based education.

Day 1 - UG Program at HKUST

Session 1: UG Program and Common Core Education

This session provides you with an overview of the undergraduate program. The Associate Provost of Teaching and Learning will present some of the strategic teaching and learning initiatives at UST, the UG curriculum, and the academic advising practice here.

Session 2: Knowing Your Students

This session intends to let you know about the UG students at HKUST in relation to teaching and learning. Some of the UG students’ characteristics including demographics, background and study habits will be introduced. The diversity of HKUST’s student body and teaching for diversity will also be touched upon.

Day 2 - Teaching at HKUST

Session 3: Sharing from HKUST Professors

In this session, faculty will share their experience of teaching at HKUST. You can learn from a distinguished teaching award winner about good practice in teaching, as well as get advice from new faculty on aspects that are helpful when you first start your academic career.

Session 4: Getting Feedback on Your Teaching

Gathering feedback from students about your teaching can be useful in helping you to develop and refine your teaching. This session will provide a number of different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester.

Day 3 - Course Design at HKUST

Session 5: Designing your Course based on OBE

This session will cover course design using an outcomes-based education approach involving the alignment of outcomes, assessments and learning activities and hands-on practice with constructing a visual syllabus. Please bring along a current or previous syllabus for a course you will teach in the coming semester.                        

Session 6: OBE - Learning Assessment

This session will introduce the alignment of learning assessments to learning outcomes and include hands-on practice with developing assessment rubrics. Please bring along a current or previous syllabus for a course you will teach in the coming semester.

Day 4 - Support for Teaching at HKUST

Session 7: Canvas Basic

Canvas is a comprehensive and user friendly Learning Management System acquired by the University in 2014 to support its changing learning and teaching needs. In this hands-on session, we will guide you through key basic features in Canvas such as creating and managing course content, communicating with students, monitoring learning progress, and grading students’ work.
