New Faculty Orientation: Teaching and Learning at HKUST, Spring 2019
The “New Faculty Orientation: Teaching and Learning at HKUST” is a teaching and learning introductory program for all teaching staff who has recently joined the University. This two-day program is offered twice a year in August and January and specifically designed to take account of some key aspects of teaching and learning in the context of HKUST.
In this program, you can learn about areas that are important to you as a new HKUST faculty member, including an overview of the 4-year UG curriculum; pedagogical approaches; teaching practice performance indicators, and strategic teaching and learning initiatives at HKUST from the Associate Provost of Teaching and Learning. The Academic Director of Undergraduate Core Education will also present in this session to give you an overview of the common core curriculum and the development process for common core courses. In another session, some of the UG students’ characteristics including demographics, background and study habits will be introduced. The diversity of HKUST’s student body and teaching for diversity will also be touched upon. In a further session, a distinguished teaching award winner and an early career faculty will share their teaching practices and give some advice on how to make learning happen productively in this university’s context. Participants can also find out from the Center for Education Innovation different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester.

In this session, you can learn from the teaching award winners regarding some good teaching practices that can enhance student learning. The session will be structured in a round table discussion format and participants are encouraged to exchange ideas with speakers on aspect that bring about good teaching at UST. |

Gathering feedback from students about your teaching can be useful in helping you to develop and refine your teaching. This session will provide a number of different ways that you can obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester. |
