The Roles of Learning Outcomes at a Research University: Challenges, Successes, and Lessons Learned

Dr Spencer Benson is the Fullbridge Visiting Scholar of the University of Hong Kong as well as the Director for the Center for Teaching Excellence of the University of Maryland. In this seminar, Dr Benson shared the experience of the University of Maryland which in 2004, the faculty and administration embarked on a five-year cycle to define, measure and use student learning outcomes to improve program quality and student learning in all undergraduate and graduate programs. He focused on the processes, outcomes, successes, challenges and lessons learned in this on-going project.
