Social Media for Teaching and Learning: Past Experiences and Future Opportunities

Date:
Monday, 25 February, 2013 - 12:30 to 14:00

Speaker: Mr. Sean MCMINN

Format: Seminar

In this session, the presenter shared how various social media, such as Wikis, WordPress, and BuddyPress, have been used in Center for Language Education courses to enrich teaching and learning. In addition, the presenter also shared the greatest challenges and opportunities instructors have encountered and provide recommendations on how to move forward, including: (1) examples of how social media can enhance collaborative and cooperative environments to encourage more student-student, student-content, and student-teacher interactions; (2) suggestions for faculty on how to monitor students’ progress in online forums or other online interactions; and (3) recommendations on how to avoid the "seductive notion" that online forums automatically facilitate critical discourse and suggest how faculty can motivate online activity.
