Assessing Students' Generic Skills: Can We Do more than just Using Course Grades?

In the first part of this talk, Prof So introduced an idea to develop an assessment report system with a particular focus on generic skills. In a preliminary study conducted in the last academic year, Prof So and his team collected Year-one students' learning behaviors and practice and analyzed their relationship with their performance in language courses, critical thinking and information literacy. Summary assessment reports were designed to disseminate assessment results to students. Together with sharing sessions to explain the findings, students were provided hints and suggestions to improve their learning effectiveness. Assessment reports will be generated again at the end of their second and third years to facilitate continued improvement.
In the second part of the talk, Prof So shared his experience in implementing OBE concepts in program development. He discussed how we may integrate academic outcomes and generic outcomes in curriculum design, in planning enrichment activities and in defining roles of various parties. With the new four-year university system, it may be timely for us to plan ahead new assessment structures and educate our students the roles of assessment in helping them to be all-rounded.
