In summer 2009, the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching has organized the New Faculty Orientation program that covers various topics and teaching and learning support services at UST.
Session 1a: HKUST's Vision and Aspiration

Session 1c: HR Issues
These sessions were delivered by VPAA (DP), PROVOST staff and Director (HRO). It set the context for the program with a brief introduction to our history with respect to our aspirations and mission. This was followed by a discussion of academic review and promotion regulations and policies at HKUST, as well as health care schemes, leave, housing, retirement and general HR policies.

Session 2: Planning your Course with OBE
This session was delivered by Nick Noakes, Director of CELT and covered the outcome-based education approach at HKUST; aligning HKUST's graduate attributes to School, Program and Course learning outcomes, and aligning these to learning activities and assessment.

Session 3: Technology-supported Teaching and Learning
This session was delivered by CELT Staff and covered the university course management system (LMES), Peer Response System, Online Student Peer Evaluation System, the Secure Online Assessment System and other tools. All of these tools have been developed in-house in response to teaching and learning needs.

Session 4: Grants & Grantsmanship in Hong Kong
This session included an introduction to the types of grants available in Hong Kong and was followed by a session on grant writing delivered by Dr Virginia Unkefer (OCGA). Based on extensive HKUST experience, Virginia used examples to describe the process of writing a grant proposal as a problem of persuasion and she explained how OCGA could help faculty members secure funding for their research projects.

Session 5: PhD Supervision
This was a panel session with a group of our experienced faculty discussing some of the key elements for effective PhD Supervision at HKUST.

Session 6: HKUST Learners & Supports for Students
This session intended to help you know our UST students better by sharing some of the characteristics of the students including their demographics, background and study habits. Findings from research on UST students’ study and learning strategies were also disseminated. It also introduced various services available at UST which support our students’ learning.

Session 7: Getting Feedback on Your Teaching
This session provided a number of different ways that you could obtain feedback on your teaching both during a course and at the end of a semester. This session was delivered by Nick Noakes, Director of CELT and Dr Tak Ha, Assistant Director of CELT.

Session 8: Teaching at the Chalkface & Teaching Development
The first part of this session was delivered by Prof Mordecai Golin who awarded the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching (2008), and Prof Rod Duclos from Department of Marketing. Their shared their experiences of teaching at HKUST with a short presentation followed by a question and answer session. The second part of this session was delivered by CELT staff and covered the range of opportunities to develop your teaching and teaching evaluation at HKUST.

Session 9: Meeting with UST Students
This session provided an opportunity for hearing first hand from some of our students about the learning experiences in and out of the classroom. This was an interactive session with follow-up questions were raised in the previous session, Teaching at the Chalkface. This session was facilitated by CELT staff.
Session 10: Library Support for Teaching and Research
New faculty members were grouped by school or department and were introduced by subject librarians to the Library’s major services and resources that support their teaching and research, such as Course Reserve, Interlibrary Loan, course specific library classes, and electronic journals and databases.
Session 11: Teaching Media Support for Your Course
This session covered PTC’s (Publishing Technology Center) media production and publishing services for teaching, including the Center’s campus-wide videotaping service for lectures and student presentations. It also included site visit of PTC AV Studio and printing facilities for producing course materials.
