This session included an introduction to the types of grants available in Hong Kong and was followed by a session on grant writing delivered by Dr Virginia Unkefer (OCGA). Based on extensive HKUST experience, Virginia has used examples to describe the process of writing a grant proposal as a problem of persuasion and she also explained how OCGA can help faculty members secure funding for their research projects.

Assessment should encourage the student to learn or test the learning that has already happened (or both). But suppose the student tries to bypass learning by using someone else's work or their words and not their own? That is what happens with plagiarism. Students bypass work and so they bypass learning. Jude Carroll's talk covered why the topic has grown so large, why it needs attention, and suggested tried and tested ways to address it.
