Social Media for Teaching and Learning

Date:
Thursday, 6 October, 2011 - 12:30 to 14:00

Presenter: Sean McMinn, Senior Instructor, Language Center
Format: Seminar

In this workshop, the speaker has focused on how social media and Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, and social networking, enrich and create new learning opportunities in higher education, extending the classroom, and enabling both students and teachers to measure the process of learning through collaborative and cooperative environments. In many ways, these tools give learners opportunities to be independent in their learning; encourage a wider range of expressive capability; facilitate more collaborative ways of working; and create more authentic opportunities for learning a subject or skill. In addition to showing the affordances and limitations of Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom, this workshop has also suggested strategies for incorporating these tools into a curriculum under a product/project-based approach to learning.
